Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) for Kindle: Navigation

Navigating the Text of the Hebrew Bible

This digital edition of the Hebrew Bible provides several options for navigation on the Kindle.

First, there is a fully interactive Table of Contents accessible, as is customary for Kindle books, via Go to -> table of contents in the menu. This Table of Contents provides hyperlinks to each book of the Bible, presented in the order common to most English versions of the Bible (not in the order of the Leningrad Codex itself). Clicking on a link to a book provides a list of chapters from which to choose. Once you click on the desired chapter, you are taken to that chapter and can flip the page to get to the desired verse if need be.

Second, when you are reading, clicking the 5-way controller to the right will advance you to the next chapter. Clicking it to the left returns you to the beginning of the present chapter, or, if you are already at the beginning of the chapter, to the beginning of the previous chapter. If you are on a page listing the chapters in a book, then clicking the 5-way controller to the right will advance you to the page listing the chapters for the next book. Clicking the 5-way controller to the left will advance you to the page listing the chapters for the previous book.

Third, you can navigate directly to a particular verse by clicking on Index in the menu and typing in an abbreviated form of the book name, chapter, and verse, with spaces separating them. For example, to navigate to Genesis 12:3, type “ge 12 3” in the Find box. This will take you to the page on which Genesis 12:3 appears. The search is not case sensitive.

Navigating the Glossary

This digital edition of the Hebrew Bible comes with The Comprehensive Biblical Hebrew and Aramaic Glossary, by Humphrey H. Hardy II, appended to it. It, too, contains mutliple options for navigation. Again, please note also that navigation details might be different in the various Kindle applications for other platforms.

First, there is a fully interactive Table of Contents accessible, as is customary for Kindle books, via Go to -> table of contents in the menu. Links for Hebrew words beginning with each letter of the alphabet precede links for Aramaic words beginning with each letter of the alphabet. Clicking on a link provides you with another hyperlinked list of two-letter combinations beginning the word. The words are arranged in alphabetical order by lexical form, not by root.

Second, when you are reading, clicking the 5-way controller to the right will advance you to the hyperlinked list for the next letter of the alphabet. If you are already on a page with a hyperlinked list for a particular letter, you will advance to the beginning of the entries for that letter. Clicking the 5-way controller to the left does similarly.

Third, you can navigate directly to a particular glossary entry by clicking on Index in the menu and typing in a prefix followed by an abbreviated form of the lexeme (word), leaving off all vowels, cantillation marks, and root disambiguators (I, II, etc.). The prefix for Hebrew words is “h ” (i.e. the letter h followed by a space), and the prefix for Aramaic words is “a ” (i.e. the letter a followed by a space). Use the transliteration scheme found in the table below. For example, to find aleph-dalet-mem in Hebrew, type “h adm”.
