Full Description

Here are a couple screenshots to whet your appetite before you read a more detailed description.

In addition to the basics of flashcard software, Babel Flashcards contains several features that help it to stand out as a superior learning tool designed to build your vocabulary: high quality data, power and freedom to create complex decks easily, beautiful rendering of UNICODE Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic across operating systems, display of Hebrew and Aramaic glosses catered to the stem-based nature of the Semitic verbal system, and use of the Leitner method of spaced repetition for efficient learning according to the way the brain works.

First, Babel Flashcards uses high quality data. The lexemes and glosses that you purchase from Miklal are curated and of the highest quality. There are decks that contain cards for every single lexeme in the Bible in the specified language, each with accurate glosses. Miklal ensures that you spend your time learning only the finest glosses. The decks tied to grammars are not generic lexemes and glosses that are linked to the vocabulary in the grammars but rather the precise lexemes and glosses found in the grammar together with all of the accompanying information (e.g. morphological irregularities) the authors provide in the textbook. To this information Miklal has added chapter and frequency (including frequency for verbal stems for Hebrew/Aramaic) information so that you can study whichever words you wish. More information is available about the source of each set of glosses on the Products page.

Second, Babel Flashcards allows you unprecedented freedom to easily create complex decks of cards. Do you want to learn the most common words? Easy. Do you want to learn all of the words in a particular passage of the Bible? Piece of cake. Do you want to learn all III-h verbs in Hebrew that occur fairly frequently? No problem. Do you want to learn all common words in one passage of the Bible and all common verbs and nouns in another? No worries. Do you want to easily choose whatever lexemes you want? Babel Flashcards makes it easy.

Third, Babel Flashcards displays Greek and Hebrew using aesthetically pleasing UNICODE fonts. For Greek, you have the option to use whatever UNICODE Greek font you prefer.

For Hebrew/Aramaic, many Windows users can choose their favorite UNICODE Hebrew font, while everyone has the option of having Babel Flashcards override the operating system’s rendering of Hebrew/Aramaic, producing beautiful UNICODE Hebrew/Aramaic with the font Ezra SIL. With such aesthetically pleasing fonts and rendering, your brain can quickly process the lexeme, allowing you to learn faster.

Fourth, Babel Flashcards helps you learn Biblical Hebrew and Biblical Aramaic in a manner that is in keeping with the stem-based nature of the Semitic verbal system. Have you ever noticed that Hebrew and Aramaic verbs take much longer to learn than nouns and adjectives? One of the main reasons for this is the difficulty in learning glosses for the various stems. Babel Flashcards makes this much easier for you. It separates the glosses out by stem visually so that the gloss for the G stem (qal in Hebrew, peal in Aramaic) is in the top left portion of the screen, the gloss for the D stem (piel in Hebrew, pael in Aramaic) is in the top middle portion of the screen, the gloss for the C stem (hiphil in Hebrew, haphel/aphel in Aramaic) is in the top right portion of the screen, etc. Babel Flashcards renders the glosses for the stems dark if they are used frequently and light if they are used infrequently so that your eye jumps to the frequent stems.  Moreover, while Babel Flashcards’s comprehensive decks provide you with glosses for every stem of every verb that is actually attested–literally no more and no fewer, you can choose to have the glosses for infrequent stems not displayed, with control over how frequent they have to be in your hands. For example, you may choose to display glosses for enough stems to cover at least 90% of the occurrences of that verb. All of these features for Hebrew and Aramaic verbs may be turned on or off–the choice is yours.

Finally, Babel Flashcards makes use of the Leitner system of spaced repetition, leveraging how the brain learns to help you memorize in a quick and lasting fashion. If your needs are more urgent, such as a quiz tomorrow, you are also welcome to set aside the Leitner method.
